Never Say Never: How One Associate Reinvented His Career After Retiring

Working one’s way up from construction general laborer to foreman is doable, but you’re talking a number of years to make that climb.

Percy Johnson did it in five months. At 53 years old.

“My philosophy is when a higher power opens a door for you, you go through that door—and give it everything you have,” Percy said. “PeopleReady was that open door, and I made sure I made the most of it.”

It was not Percy’s first meteoric rise. As a Desert Storm U.S. Army vet looking for work in New York in 1999, Percy landed a job as a door-to-door salesman with a direct marketing firm.

“I was like, ‘Wow, this isn’t hard. This isn’t hard at all.’ Of course, you’re cold calling, so you had your unpleasant people. But all in all, it was a good fit. I told myself, ‘You can get noticed.’”

And that’s exactly what he did.

“It was all about numbers—an income goal. I reached the goal several times over,” he said. “It was unreal. I’d never had any substantial money in my life before that.”

Percy continued to excel and rose through the company until there was only one more move to make: owner. He bought the company and ran it for 22 years. But his success came at a price. “I woke up one day and realized: I don’t know my son. His likes. His dislikes. I’d been working 16- to 17-hour days. Something had to change.”

He sold the business and moved to Virginia to retire early. But it wasn’t long before the go-getter grew restless, itching for a challenge.

“My wife said, ‘You like fixing things around the house; why don’t you go into construction?’”

Ever the overachiever, Percy earned a degree in construction management and started applying to local contractors as a foreman—aiming high, as usual.

“But no one wanted to hire a 53-year-old guy with no experience,” Percy said. “I was just banging my head against the wall. It drove me crazy. But I told myself, ‘Where you are is where you need to be. Something will come up.’”

He succeeded. Impressed with Percy, the company hired him full time after a month. Within two months, he was a lead. Two months later, he was promoted to foreman. PeopleReady Shares Top Temporary Jobs Companies are Hiring for over the Next 30 Days

As all 50 states begin to reopen in some way and millions of unemployed look for opportunities to get back to work, staffing leader PeopleReady is releasing a list of the most in-demand temporary jobs companies are hiring for over the next 30 days.

The company is also releasing new survey findings detailing just how deep COVID-19 cut into American household budgets. PeopleReady is reminding workers who may be struggling financially that temporary jobs can help bridge employment gaps, provide income and help get their foot in the door with new employers in a tough job market.

“As the nation begins the slow process of emerging from COVID-19 shutdowns, the permanent job market will take time to recover, and workers may need to think about employment differently than they did a few months ago,” said Taryn Owen, President of PeopleReady. “Temporary work can help people build new skills, establish relationships with potential employers and bring much needed income to households across the country.”   

PeopleReady compiled its list of the top temporary job opportunities for the next 30 days based on data provided by its JobStack app, which enables companies to request help for their on-demand staffing needs 24/7 and allows workers to view and accept assignments in real time and get paid quickly. Each of the following position types has thousands of jobs posted needing workers in the next 30 days: 

Warehouse Workers (ex: forklift operators, pick/pack workers, shipping/receiving workers)

Sanitation Workers (ex: janitors, industrial cleaners)

Food Processing and Preparation (ex: pastry chefs, food preparers, food assembly workers)

Construction Laborers (ex: foremen, helpers, flaggers)

Manufacturing Workers (ex: assemblers and fabricators, material handlers)

Retail Workers (ex: stockers and truck unloaders for grocery stores and pharmacies)

Waste Management Workers (ex: refuse collectors, recycling and reclamation workers)

Skilled Trades Workers (ex: carpenters, electricians, HVAC, solar installers, welders)

Driving home the need to highlight areas hiring right now, a new survey by PeopleReady found the vast majority (72%) of workers say they are worried they won’t be able to pay for their housing in the coming months, let alone other basics like groceries and utility bills. 

More than half of those surveyed report they’ve been affected by job loss due to COVID-19, either their own, a spouse/significant other or another family member.


  • Workers that are having trouble making ends meet: 70%
  • Workers who are afraid they’ll be unable to pay their rent or mortgage in the coming months: 72%
  • Workers having difficulty affording the basics: 62%
  • Workers who have missed bill payments: 60%

Top bills workers reported missing: 

  • Utility bills: 50%
  • Rent or mortgage payment: 46%
  • Car insurance: 31%
  • Car payment: 25%
  • Health insurance: 14%
  • Other bills: 46%

Lack of savings weighing on workers:

While more than 36% report having no personal savings, those who do worry it won’t last long. Respondents said their personal savings will likely last:

  • One week or less: 20%
  • Two to three weeks: 17%
  • One to two months: 15%
  • Three to five months: 5%
  • Six to 11 months: 3%
  • A year or longer: 4%

Karis Richmond: A Vet Gets a “Working Interview”

Karis Richmond had just left the Navy after four years and was looking to create a new life. He had a line on a job with the Post Office. However, he needed some extra money to tide himself over until his paperwork made its way through the postal hiring process.

So, he stopped into the Orlando PeopleReady, thinking a couple of temporary assignments should do the trick.

Branch Manager Malcom McCoy would receive rave reviews every time he sent Karis to a customer.

Then Malcom had a thought: Maybe Karis would be the person for a client looking for just the right person.

Renew Digital refurbishes and resells X-ray machines to doctors and dentists. They would request associates to work as helpers for their technicians. Malcom’s contact with the company told him they’d be interested in a temporary worker who could quickly transfer to full-time employment.

 The company stated the worker would be the “face of the company” for the customer. They needed a perfect fit. The person acts as a helper to a technician removing and installing X-ray machines—and that meant direct customer contact.

“The person we’re looking for only needs to have something explained once to him or her and after that they can work with minimal supervision. Someone with a real head on their shoulders.”

Malcolm knew Karis was just the right person for the job. In the Navy, Karis worked as an aircraft technician on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier—a pressure-cooker environment where there was no room for error. A place where there’s never enough time to explain something twice.

Kevin Marler, Renew’s senior install technician, could immediately see Karis was a great candidate for the job.

“Right off the bat, he showed initiative,” Kevin said, explaining that Karis showed initiative and know-how from the start, with minimal supervision.

Quickly, Renew offered Karis a full-time job as a tech assistant. Shortly after that, they put him through training and made him a traveling tech. Kevin is still impressed with Karis every time he works with him.

“It’s the attention to detail,” Kevin said.

Success Stories: Gidget Goes West

Imagine traveling the country: seeing wondrous landmarks, meeting interesting new people, finding a new adventure at the start of every week. You’d explore all of the different foods and accents and attractions; it’s what calls people to travel every day. While some only dream of this nomadic lifestyle, some actually get to live it—and Gidget Kisner is one of them. 

Wherever she goes, Gidget shares the experiences she’s had and the wonders she’s seen all across the nation, from the awe-inspiring Redwood Forests to the sun-kissed beaches of Santa Monica. What’s also interesting about Gidget’s travels is how she gets to all of these places. She says she’s seen 45 of the 50 states “all because of PeopleReady.” 

You may wonder how working with a staffing company, particularly one that offers short-term placement, might help someone to travel so freely. Gidget explains that only a short two years ago, she had been working as a server and bartender in Ocean Springs, MI. It’s when she decided to follow her dreams of getting out on the road and “just go”. Gidget says, “I’d always wanted to know where Highway 90 went” and to visit the Santa Monica Pier. So she enlisted Oz, her then-boyfriend, gave away all her belongings, and hit the road in her Volvo SUV.

They began driving West for what she says felt like years, tent camping along the way, before finally arriving in Van Horn, Texas. The first leg of the trip and exploring the country around her had Gidget hooked. 

After Texas, they ventured forth to the Land of Enchantment: New Mexico. While the excitement was high, they also realized funds were running low. With $12 left, it was time to find work to support their explorations. Gidget searched for the nearest PeopleReady office and went in to meet the recruiters. When they first set out on their trip, she didn’t have access to the JobStack app, which alerts workers to jobs available in their area at all times on their mobile phones. After her meeting with the recruiters in Las Cruces, New Mexico, she immediately went to the library to finish her application before heading back to the PeopleReady office. Being proactive helped Gidget immediately: She was sent out to work right away to a concert in the area. After this first gig, PeopleReady saw how fortunate they were to have Gidget on their team. The Van Horn recruiters added gas money to her pay card and got her off to the next location, Elephant Butte State Park.

From that point on, she became familiar with PeopleReady gigs across America. According to Gidget and Oz’s Excellent Adventure, “Nearly everywhere they’ve gone, the two have found work, either together or individually.” From working car shows in California to remodeling high-end cosmetics boutiques in the Midwest to digging ditches in Arizona, Gidget used her skills in all sorts of jobs and learned new ones in jobs she’d never tackled before. She says that she learned to understand how different branches operate in different areas. Although PeopleReady is one company, there are differences from office to office. Over time, she found the places she knew she enjoyed working the most and the types of shifts that were ideal for her. As Gidget learned these things, she shares of the places she was able to see: Mountains Rainier and St. Helens, Mount Rushmore, and Yosemite…even getting to throw fish at the famous Pike Place Market in Seattle!

Now that she’s taking a break from cross-country traveling, she calls Gulfport her local office. From here, she gets to use her bartending expertise at a variety of VIP events and concerts, from Cher to Thomas Rhett to The 1975. She’s constantly getting to enjoy her favorite tunes while finding new music, saying “PeopleReady supplements me the ability to have fun!” On top of the concerts, Gidget has gotten to bartend at every single Saints Game of the past three seasons, which is no small perk when the Saints are your favorite team. She’s excited that not only can she make money while in the thick of the “crazy electricity” of a game, but she also enjoys getting “to be there front and center” amid the game-day action.

So what’s next for Gidget? Will she spend some downtime and enjoy being in one place for some time? Will wanderlust strike again? Who knows what’s next for this rolling stone – but in the meantime, she’s confident she’ll be working the jobs she wants.
