Workforce Trend: Temporary Jobs are Here to Stay as Part of Post-Pandemic Workforce, PeopleReady Survey Finds

Survey also reveals most Americans seeking more job opportunities in pandemic-battered economy, many looking to temp and part-time work.

February 23, 2021

TACOMA, Wash.Feb. 23, 2021—The rise in importance of temporary jobs during the pandemic has been undeniable as businesses look to navigate an unpredictable climate. A new survey out today from staffing leader PeopleReady finds that many companies (40%) are planning to make temporary jobs a permanent part of their post-pandemic workforce model.

In the past year, 52% of companies have increased their use of temporary workers and cited the need to scale their workforce as the top reason. The PeopleReady survey of both hiring managers and workers found that most workers (65%) are considering temporary or part-time work to earn more income amid a rough economy. Additionally, those taking full-time jobs have declined by 56% since the onset of the pandemic in March 2020. In comparison, those taking temporary jobs has increased by 66%, and those accepting part-time employment has risen by 13%.

“Temporary jobs have become vital to both businesses and job seekers over the past year and our research indicates that will only increase in the future,” said Taryn Owen, president of PeopleReady. “As temporary jobs become increasingly integrated into workforce models, we are focused on making it faster and easier to connect people and work.”

To make it easier for job seekers to connect with available temporary jobs, PeopleReady is holding a nationwide hiring event this week. The staffing company has a variety of ways for job seekers to access potential job opportunities: via app (JobStack), online (jobs.peopleready.com) and in person (at PeopleReady locations across the nation).

Other key findings from the PeopleReady survey include:

  • 74% of hiring managers say the pandemic has changed how they staff their workforce.
  • 53% of companies increased their use of staffing firms during the last year.
  • The overwhelming majority (77%) of people now know someone who has lost a job in the past year.
  • Most Americans feel the job market is either getting worse (54%) or staying the same as it has for the past several months (22%).

About the survey: The PeopleReady survey of hiring managers and employees was conducted between Dec. 19, 2020, and Jan. 2, 2021. The margin of error is +/- 4%.

Ready to Work in 2021? PeopleReady Analysis Finds the Most In-Demand Temporary Jobs Hiring Over the Next 30 Days

Staffing leader’s analysis focuses on connecting people to jobs as full-time hiring slows

January 12, 2021

TACOMA, Wash.—Jan. 12, 2021—As job gains slow and the number of people filing for unemployment continues to rise, job seekers may find their next opportunity in temporary work. Staffing leader PeopleReady says that temporary jobs are in high demand right now—and to help connect people to the jobs, the company is releasing a list of the top temporary jobs hiring over the next 30 days.

“The reality is that the full-time jobs many people have lost are the slowest to recover. Whereas, following an economic downturn, temporary jobs are added at a faster rate—meaning there are temporary jobs available right now to help job seekers start the new year off right,” said Taryn Owen, president of PeopleReady. “Temporary jobs can provide reliable and necessary income for job seekers while also offering them greater flexibility and freedom.”

PeopleReady compiled its list of the top temporary job opportunities for the next 30 days based on an analysis of thousands of job postings on its JobStack app, which enables companies to request help for their on-demand staffing needs 24/7 and allows workers to view and accept assignments in real time. Each of the following position types has thousands of available jobs posted in the next 30 days:

  • Construction and general workers (ex: foremen, helpers, flaggers, general workers)
  • Food processing and preparation workers (ex: cooks, food preparers, food assembly workers)
  • Manufacturing/production workers (ex: packagers, assemblers and fabricators, material handlers)
  • Sanitation workers (ex: janitorial workers, housekeeping, industrial cleaners)
  • Warehouse workers (ex: forklift operators, shipping/receiving workers, freight handlers)
  • Skilled trades workers (ex: carpenters, electricians, HVAC technicians, solar installers, welders)

To make it easier for job seekers to connect with thousands of available jobs, PeopleReady is holding a nationwide hiring event this week. She helps cultivate positive interactions between associates and the client so that processes run smoothly and productivity remains high. Lynch steered the company through its safety response to COVID-19 for associates, clients and employees. She also leads the company’s work to provide ongoing training and development to all service and management leaders. This is her third consecutive year on the list.

It also emphasizes the importance of continuing to drive greater diversity, equity and inclusion at TrueBlue and throughout the staffing industry.”

“The Global Power 150 – Women in Staffing 2020 are redefining leadership in their decisions, their compassion and their service to their teams and communities,” said Subadhra Sriram, Editor & Publisher, Media Products at SIA. “In a year rife with disruption and with ripple effects disproportionally impacting women and communities of color, this year’s honorees are steadfast in their commitments to diversity and to building resilient and inclusive organizations as they take their businesses, and the ecosystem, forward.”
