And your business will find that temporary labor gives you the flexibility to stay balanced, to survive, and to even grow stronger.

Given the inevitable ups and downs of the economy, things can change at a moment’s notice. Why a Contingent Workforce Helps Overcome the Blue-Collar Worker Shortage

There have been few successful solutions to the blue-collar worker shortage so far. Here’s why a contingent workforce may be the answer.

February 5, 2021

blue collar worker

The blue-collar worker shortage has long been a problem for the American economy. Despite the attention the issue has received, there have been few successful solutions. The move toward a more contingent workforce is happening now. This shift will lead to greater pressure on businesses to identify and hire contingent workers who can get the job done.

37% of blue-collar-heavy companies reported a measurable adverse impact of the worker shortage on the company’s profitability versus just 9% of white-collar-heavy companies.

—The Conference Board, 2020

The U.S. workforce shortage—especially for blue-collar workers—is expected to continue through at least 2030, according to a study by The Conference Board. Factors driving the blue-collar workforce shortage include:

  • The baby boomer exodus
  • Dismal growth in the working-age population
  • Disappointing recovery in overall labor force participation
  • Men without a college degree are less likely to work
  • Large increase in disability rates
  • More young adults are avoiding trades, pursuing college instead
  • Young adults are much less likely to be in the labor force

By being open to contingent workers, businesses tap into talent that they might not otherwise gain access to, especially those who may have specific knowledge and training that could be beneficial to their operations. Many businesses are realizing that the quickest and most efficient way to get specialized talent is to hire them as contingent workers. Depending on future needs, these workers can eventually be transitioned into full-time positions.

Offering Greater Flexibility

Flexible working arrangements can also be an asset for a new generation of workers. They may have been recently separated from full-time employment or are reconsidering their career options. People often work on a part-time or temporary basis so that they can pursue other interests or gain experience in their chosen career, with an eye on pursuing a full-time position. The primary reasons temporary workers choose to be temporary workers are:

  • As a method of finding a regular/permanent job or because I thought it might lead to a regular/permanent position, 49%
  • Supplemental income while looking for a regular/permanent position, 11%
  • Supplemental income while not looking for a regular/permanent position, 14%
  • Learning new skills/get work experience, 13%
  • Other, 13%

Expanding Business Operations

The current environment has provided businesses of every size and sector ample opportunity to reconsider their roles in the continued economic recovery. Businesses will focus on diversifying in order to mitigate risk: Some of them may be eager to grow their project base; others may be looking into different markets.

If businesses are considering expanding their geographic footprint or service offerings, contingent workers may be a tremendous asset during this important transition. With contingent workers, businesses can find workers with the specialized skills that they need for a particular project, without having to make a long-term commitment.

Staying Agile in Uncertain Times

Businesses are increasingly looking for flexibility and scalability to meet the demands of a rapidly changing economy and to take advantage of new opportunities. As the business landscape continues to change, the makeup of their workforce will need to adjust as well. A temporary workforce allows for flexibility to adjust as needed, accommodating changes in the industry and financial circumstances that businesses will face in the future.

While every business has its own unique needs based on industry, location and other factors, contingent workers can bridge an important gap as leaders map out their plan of action. As we see more people turn to contingent work as they adapt to the current economic climate, having the ability to find workers and in the future is imperative.

In order to find the contingent workers you need, when you need them, a staffing agency can help enormously and keep things moving along smoothly. If you’re looking for a staffing partner to help you, contact PeopleReady today.

Building Better Mental Health in Construction

In an industry where mental health issues are particularly acute, construction businesses are under even more pressure to address the challenges of their workforce. Here are some tips on how they can do it.

In an industry where mental health issues are particularly acute, construction businesses are under even more pressure to address the challenges of their workforce during these unusual times. Not only are they concerned about the COVID-19 pandemic, but they’re also worried about how to support themselves and their families. They have likely seen loved ones faced with job loss, illness, and even death. They may be wary about coming to work, fearing an increased risk of infection.

Many blue-collar workers pride themselves on being tough, which prevents them from acknowledging their mental health and seeking help. Seasonal unemployment, long hours and exhaustion can also trigger mental health issues. Depression and anxiety often go undiagnosed and untreated, making the construction industry one of the occupations most at risk for suicide.

The suicide rate has surged 40 percent in the U.S. over less than two decades, with blue-collar workers at a significantly higher risk, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC analyzed suicide rates by industry and occupational groups by gender using data from the 32 states that participated in the 2016 National Violent Death Reporting system.

  • In 2017, nearly 38,000 people between the ages of 16 and 64 died by suicide in the U.S., according to the CDC. The overall suicide rate rose by 40% from 2000.
  • The total suicide rate among all men was 27.4 individuals per 100,000 people, but the rate among those in the construction field was 49.4 per 100,000.
  • For women, the suicide rate for the total population studied was 7.7 per 100,000 individuals. The suicide rate for women in construction, however, was 25.5 per 100,000 individuals—the highest among any profession.

Construction workers are exposed to a number of risks by the nature of their job. Adding in outside health risks may lead to work-related injuries. A study published recently in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that six health risk behaviors were more common in the construction industry, which PeopleReady shares below.

  • Smoking
  • Smokeless tobacco use
  • Binge drinking
  • No leisure-time physical activity
  • Not always using a seatbelt
  • Getting less than seven hours of sleep a day

How to Build the Workforce You Want with JobStack

No matter your staffing challenge, our app JobStack can tackle it. See how just one app can solve so many problems.

February 3, 2021

The success of your business depends on the quality of your workforce. You want to ensure that the workers you have showing up every day are dependable and have the skills needed to excel at the job. Working with a staffing company may seem like a risk—you aren’t the one in control of who is showing up every day—but it doesn’t have to be.

PeopleReady’s app, JobStack, helps you build a successful team of on-demand staff. When you use the app to request staff for your projects, you have the ability to rate workers, extend workers on your current job and request top performers again for future jobs. Let’s dive further into what all that means for you.

Find Top Performers

With JobStack, you can give every worker a rating between 1–5 stars after they complete a shift. Not only do you help other businesses spot great workers (and other businesses can do the same for you!), but you will find them more easily the next time you need top performers.

Speaking of top performers: When you need some additional help, JobStack allows you to reconnect with workers who have supported your team in the past. If you find workers you’d like to bring back, just send them an exclusive invitation to your job. That means no middleman and none of the hassle of having to onboard a new worker.

A Flexible Workforce

We know every day is different for your business, which means your need for a flexible workforce can change at any minute. Therefore, we offer the ability to extend job orders depending on your unique business needs, like if a project ends up taking longer than expected or if someone is fitting in well with your team and you want them to keep coming back.

After all, the only way to build a successful team is to choose the right workers for your business. JobStack has over 53,000 associates using the app every day, which allows you to find the right workers for your specific needs.

Infographic: 3 Tips to Rebound Your Workforce Post-COVID-19

We provide a few important tips to help your business navigate the world of work and come back stronger than before during the COVID-19 pandemic.

January 21, 2021

Every company, in some way, has been impacted by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Now as businesses look to reopen their doors, it’s critical they take the steps outlined in this PeopleReady infographic into consideration.

What Our Customers Are Saying About JobStack

Looking for a company that lets you work when you want, and where you want? PeopleReady has just the jobs for you.

January 20, 2021

Jobstack

We know you’re busy. Your day is already packed from start to finish—and when you add in the time and energy it takes to make sure you’re staffed to get the job done, your list just gets longer. Our mobile app JobStack alleviates a lot of that pressure, but don’t just take it from us.

PeopleReady went directly to our customers to find out how they’re using, JobStack, and why they keep coming back to it.

Quality Matters

With JobStack, after a worker completes a job, the customer is prompted to rate their performance within the app. It’s a convenient way to give feedback and also makes it easier to request the same strong performers for future gigs. According to the data, JobStack is bringing customers the right workers:

  • On a scale from 1-5, 66% of customers give their works a 5, the best possible score.
  • Another 21% rate their workers a “4.”
  • The overall average score of workers ordered through JobStack is a 4.5.

JobStack Makes Ordering Easy

jobstack customer research

Of the top reasons customers chose to use JobStack, the ease of ordering was the clear winner. The ability to put out a call for workers from the phone you (probably always) have in your hand takes convenience to a new level.

I like that I can approve hours and submit orders even when I am not at my desk. With all the emails that come back and forth on a daily basis, the app cuts down on communication with the branch, and I can just log in on the app to enter what I need.

A One-Stop Shop

When you look at the top challenges JobStack has helped customers overcome, you can’t help but notice that they are varied. Half of users consider the ability to place orders yourself the top challenge they overcame, but not far behind is eliminating paperwork, inviting back top performers, and placing orders at any time. This variety is a prime example that JobStack simplifies all aspects of the hiring process.

[JobStack] has made it so much easier for our admins to handle payment after the job; no more trying to find where time cards went or confirm accuracy since we are able to submit hours before even leaving the job site. Being able to have more control over our orders with the app has been a great time saver and helps keep us organized with our multiple jobs.

JobStack Saves Time

JobStack customers cited saving time as the top benefit of using the app. When you can do everything from placing orders to approving time cards from your phone, you end up saving more time than you thought possible.

Since I own a small company and schedules change at the last minute, JobStack allows me to work my hours (24/7) without having to worry about getting someone on the phone to discuss [staffing] needs. I really like knowing whom to expect to show up before the beginning of the project.

Keep Your Workers Safe This Winter with JobStack

Avoid long-term safety and legal issues for your business with these important safety tips for the winter season.

January 17, 2021

In many states, winter brings icy roads, dangerous conditions, and slippery surfaces—and many an opportunity to catch a cold (or worse). Now more than ever, you must have a plan for your operations and workforce during these times.

Fortunately, OSHA is serious about informing businesses and workers on how to prepare for inclement winter weather and helping to ensure safety throughout the season. Their helpful recommendations are the best way to protect your workers and your business:

Promote Safe Driving

If your employees commute to your job site, make sure you promote safe driving. Remind your workers about checking vehicle systems, from their brakes to the oil—particularly if they are operating any type of machinery on site. Include emergency kits within each of your work vehicles as well, complete with all recommended items including:

  • Cellphone or two-way radio
  • Windshield ice scraper
  • Snowbrush
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Shovel
  • Tow chain
  • Traction aids (bag of sand or cat litter)
  • Emergency flares
  • Jumper cables
  • Snacks
  • Water
  • Road maps
  • Blankets, change of clothes

Educate on Cold Stress

Learn the different types of cold stress from hypothermia to frostbite to immersion and how to recognize conditions that can lead to cold stress and cold stress symptoms. You’ll also need to know how to prevent cold stress and treat those who are affected, and the proper clothing for inclement weather. Then, make sure you educate your team on these same things.

Workers should know how to recognize symptoms of cold stress so they know how to treat it. Cold stress may look different depending on weather conditions, whether it’s extreme cold, near-freezing temperatures, or even increased wind speed.

Common Risk Factors for Cold Stress

  • Wetness/dampness, dressing improperly and exhaustion
  • Preexisting health conditions such as hypertension, hypothyroidism, and diabetes
  • Poor physical conditioning or preparation
  • Read more in OSHA’s Cold Stress Guide.

Address the Conditions

Although it may be tempting to brush off potential dangerous conditions in favor of getting the job done in time, it’s not worth risking long-term safety and legal issues. Be sure you prepare the job site and anyone working on the job site for safety, including but not limited to clearing snow and ice from walkways, spreading deicer, ensuring all mechanics are winter-proofed with proper maintenance and providing adequate fall protection.

If the job site is simply too dangerous or risks too high for work, postpone the job and help your workers understand the importance of safety. If workers have a high risk of getting to your job site, consider allowing them time off or the opportunity to make up the time when conditions are safer.

Rather than risk losing someone on your team to sick days or injury, get hands on deck that are healthy, ready, and can get to you without putting their safety in jeopardy. This is when a staffing partner like PeopleReady helps—and can provide you with the workers you need to get the job done, no matter the forecast.

Tips for Tackling After-Hour Work with JobStack

You get an urgent call from a customer requesting more workers at the job site. See how PeopleReady can help support your staffing efforts quickly and easily.

It’s 6 p.m. and after closing up shop, you’re finally ready to head home for the day. Just as you’re about to walk out the door, you get an urgent call from a customer. They have an urgent need that affects your job site.

How often do you find yourself working after hours? Sometimes it’s inevitable. In fact, 85.8% of men and 66.5% of women in the United States are working overtime. If you’re in this majority, here are some tips for tackling after-hours work.

Create a Plan

Taking work home with you can mean stress and distractions. A plan will help you stay on task as opposed to juggling work and your personal life. Make sure your plan indicates where you’ll be working, and create a work space at home will help keep you in a work mindset. There are likely to be distractions, so make sure to work in breaks as well.

Tackle What You Can

Always start with the most urgent tasks. If you know you need to complete a task on the jobsite by 7 a.m., tackle that first. The later it gets in the evening, the more likely it is that the other people you rely on will be offline. Always set a non-negotiable time where you put away your work. This will help you prioritize what you can get done before bed.

Partner When Possible

Look for partners who offer around-the-clock help. PeopleReady offers staffing solutions 24/7. Remember, always start with the most urgent tasks. With PeopleReady and JobStack, you’re able to place staffing orders from anywhere, at any time. This helps you get the help you need quickly, giving you more time to focus on more complicated tasks.

PeopleReady specializes in quick and reliable on-demand labor and highly skilled workers. PeopleReady supports a wide range of blue-collar industries, including construction, manufacturing and logistics, waste and recycling, and hospitality.
