Keep Your Workers Safe This Winter with JobStack

In many states, winter brings icy roads, dangerous conditions, and slippery surfaces—and many an opportunity to catch a cold (or worse). Now more than ever, you must have a plan for your operations and workforce during these times.

Fortunately, OSHA is serious about informing businesses and workers on how to prepare for inclement winter weather and helping to ensure safety throughout the season. Their helpful recommendations are the best way to protect your workers and your business:

Promote Safe Driving

If your employees commute to your job site, make sure you promote safe driving. Remind your workers about checking vehicle systems, from their brakes to the oil—particularly if they are operating any type of machinery on site. Include emergency kits within each of your work vehicles as well, complete with all recommended items including: 

  • Cellphone or two-way radio
  • Windshield ice scraper
  • Snowbrush
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Shovel
  • Tow chain
  • Traction aids (bag of sand or cat litter)
  • Emergency flares
  • Jumper cables
  • Snacks
  • Water
  • Road maps
  • Blankets, change of clothes

Educate on Cold Stress

Learn the different types of cold stress from hypothermia to frostbite to immersion and how to recognize conditions that can lead to cold stress and cold stress symptoms. You’ll also need to know how to prevent cold stress and treat those who are affected, and the proper clothing for inclement weather. Then, make sure you educate your team on these same things.

Workers should know how to recognize symptoms of cold stress so they know how to treat it. Cold stress may look different depending on weather conditions, whether it’s extreme cold, near-freezing temperatures, or even increased wind speed.  

Common Risk Factors for Cold Stress

  • Wetness/dampness, dressing improperly and exhaustion
  • Preexisting health conditions such as hypertension, hypothyroidism, and diabetes

Address the Conditions

Although it may be tempting to brush off potential dangerous conditions in favor of getting the job done in time, it’s not worth risking long-term safety and legal issues. Be sure you prepare the job site and anyone working on the job site for safety, including but not limited to clearing snow and ice from walkways, spreading deicer, ensuring all mechanics are winter-proofed with proper maintenance and providing adequate fall protection.

If the job site is simply too dangerous or risks too high for work, postpone the job and help your workers understand the importance of safety. If workers have a high risk of getting to your job site, consider allowing them time off or the opportunity to make up the time when conditions are safer.

When a natural disaster hits our communities, we all feel it. Whether near the impact or across the country, you’re bound to see the harm that a natural disaster leaves in its path. From hurricanes to wildfires, you might feel helpless, wondering how you can aid and assist. You’re not alone, but a silver lining is that during each of these times, we’re reminded of the amazing people we work with and how great it is when a company can come together for the greater good.

What are some of the times that PeopleReady and our incredible associates have jumped at the opportunity to help?

  • When Panama City felt devastation from Hurricane Michael, we saw buildings leveled and thousands of people losing their homes. Groups from surrounding branches—Fort Walton; Tallahassee; Dothan, Alabama; and Pensacola—gathered to make the trip to lend helping hands. The immediate and on-going relief came quickly after the rush of a storm and workers showed up in waves, ready to work together to rebuild.
  • Upon Hurricane Florence, it was crucial for our branch staff to stay connected with their fellow PeopleReady employees, associates, and customers in the potential impact zone and tracked their safety throughout the storm. Communication and rates were coordinated with our Disaster & Recovery customers preparing for the hurricane and we quickly moved to activate our teams across the country to help get people to work as quickly as possible. Ensuring our associates safety was key – as was making sure they had access to work, even during these uncertain times.

Spectrum Solutions Gets Staffing Support from PeopleReady

Spectrum Solutions needed additional staffing to meet demand for COVID-19 test kits, so they turned to PeopleReady for their workforce needs.

Spectrum Solutions is a company known for producing the saliva-based DNA testing kits used by Ancestry.com to help people discover their lineage. And for the company based in Draper, Utah, business was thriving.

Then COVID-19 struck, and company leaders wondered what they could do to help keep people and communities safe.

Cities across the U.S. are struggling to access and administer COVID-19 test kits to help track and contain the virus. The typical test for COVID-19 involves a cotton swab to either the throat or nose, and, with cases of COVID-19 soaring, demand was far outstripping supply. In addition, this method of testing typically requires healthcare providers to discard gloves and masks after close contact with anyone who may have the virus—critical PPE equipment that is also in short supply.

So, without delay, Spectrum started to explore a saliva-based testing kit using the approach and the technology they already had in place, evolving it to help in one of the most important fights of our time.

24/7 staffing needs

The Spectrum team knew they’d have to turn on a dime. Working around the clock, they were able to quickly develop a test that met the same standards and delivered similar results to the swab-testing method. What’s more, under a medical provider’s supervision, the saliva collection could be self-administered, which removes the need for close contact with healthcare workers—protecting the patient and staff and preserving PPE.

“This pandemic impacts every segment of society and keeping people safe is about everyone pitching in to make a difference,” said Bill Phillips, Spectrum’s Chief Operating Officer. “We saw helping as our responsibility. That meant quickly pivoting and ramping up our operations during these unprecedented times.”

The FDA–EUA fast-tracked approval of the test kit, which was developed in tandem with Rutgers University and can produce results in 24 hours. With demand high, Phillips anticipated Spectrum would produce 1 million kits per month initially and eventually as high as 3 million a month. They needed more people to support production, so, the company reached out to PeopleReady, who is now serving as its exclusive staffing partner for temporary staffing support.

“Spectrum is helping to save lives. We knew they needed the best and we’d need to be able to provide them with a workforce virtually overnight,” said Stefan Hiesel, Market Manager for PeopleReady. “Working with Spectrum, we were able to meet their needs at two production facilities to support the important work they’re doing.”

PeopleReady associates are now a vital part of the Spectrum team, working in the “clean room” and serving as the last touch point for the kits before they are sent around the globe.

The company is also releasing new survey findings detailing just how deep COVID-19 cut into American household budgets. PeopleReady is reminding workers who may be struggling financially that temporary jobs can help bridge employment gaps, provide income and help get their foot in the door with new employers in a tough job market.

“As the nation begins the slow process of emerging from COVID-19 shutdowns, the permanent job market will take time to recover, and workers may need to think about employment differently than they did a few months ago,” said Taryn Owen, President of PeopleReady. “Temporary work can help people build new skills, establish relationships with potential employers and bring much needed income to households across the country.”

Driving home the need to highlight areas hiring right now, a new survey by PeopleReady found the vast majority (72%) of workers say they are worried they won’t be able to pay for their housing in the coming months, let alone other basics like groceries and utility bills. 

More than half of those surveyed report they’ve been affected by job loss due to COVID-19, either their own, a spouse/significant other or another family member.

Workforce Survey by the Numbers

  • Workers that are having trouble making ends meet: 70%
  • Workers who are afraid they’ll be unable to pay their rent or mortgage in the coming months: 72%
  • Workers having difficulty affording the basics: 62%
  • Workers who have missed bill payments: 60%

  • Utility bills: 50%
  • Rent or mortgage payment: 46%
  • Car insurance: 31%
  • Car payment: 25%
  • Health insurance: 14%
  • Other bills: 46%

Lack of Savings Weighing on Workers

While more than 36% report having no personal savings, those who do worry it won’t last long. Respondents said their personal savings will likely last:

  • One week or less: 20%
  • Two to three weeks: 17%
  • One to two months: 15%
  • Three to five months: 5%
  • Six to 11 months: 3%
  • A year or longer: 4%
